Plastics

Most common plastics are:
• Polypropylene (PP);
• Polyethylene (PE);
• Polystyrene (PS);
• Polyvinyl chloride (PVC);
• Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE);
• Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS);
• Polyethyleenterefalaat (PET);

Unlike metals plastics aren’t very well categorized – within the different type groups endless varieties exist due to colouring, filling, strengthening, or any other upgrade or function adaption one can think of.

Recycling plastics mainly is about separating the different material types as much as possible. The purer the recycled plastic the better its ability te be re-used.

Separation techniques are:
• Flotation – separation based on specific weight;
• Optical sorting – based on colour, shape or other detactable feature.
